On October 27, convocation ceremony for international freshmen was held in Yansong Hall, northern campus of WZU.
Vice President Qian Qiang delivered a welcome address to class of 2021, totaling 279 students from 53 countries of 5 continents. In his speech, Mr. Qian said that Wenzhou is a pioneer in China’s private economy as well as reform and opening-up in ways that they created“Wenzhou Business Model”. With 70,000 doing business in 131 countries or regions, and 2 million in China in a bold and inspiring spirit , Wenzhou people is regarded as the“oriental Jews”. As a university with robust growth and a profound history, Wenzhou University has been building itself into a application-oriented world-class university, an institution of higher learning for Wenzhou people and a shining star under belt and road initiative. He expects international students to learn Chinese well while studying their majors. Mr. Qian also encouraged international students to take part in practical activities in ways that know more about Wenzhou and China in large.Last but not least, international students are also encouraged to capture oriental beauty around themselves, be open to different cultures and become cultural ambassadors connecting China and other countries.
“Wenzhou University provide a good platform of academic pursuit where students develop their interests,broaden their horizon,embrace new perspectives and fit in new environment,”said Professor Gu Yugui,one candidate of China’s Recruitment Program of Global Experts.
During the ceremony, Vice President Fang Yiquan and heads of different colleges bestowed a variety of scholarships to 67 international students. Mr. Fang and Mrs. Lin Juanjuan, Senior Adviser of Governing Council of WZU, helped international students wear WZU badge and presented to students Four Treasures of the Study, traditional writing tools of Chinese calligraphy.
Adofo Michael Adjei, a postgraduate majoring in software engineering, delivered the address as a representative of senior students. He shared his experience in Wenzhou.FrankinGeorge, a freshmen from UK, shared his future study plan, hoping that he can study language and his major well, broaden his horizon and serve as a bridge connecting China and UK.
The opening convocation end itself with a chorus entitled song for WZU international students,which made its debut in the ceremony.
