First Competition for Teaching Skills Held Successfully

On the morning of October 10, the first competition for teaching skills was held successfully in Room 311, North Campus. This competition was held for combined reasons of improving the teaching skills of the master’s students in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, developing their innovative teaching concepts and methods, and selecting capable students to participate in the 6th "Wodongbei" a teaching skill competition for masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, and Shanghai City. It was hosted by Associate Professor Tu Haiqiang and judged together by Professor Zheng Juanman, Associate Professor Tu Haiqiang, and Ms. Zhou Jinghan.

This competition went exactly in the same procedure as the “Wodongbei” Competition. The contestants drew lots in advance to determine the order of who would go first. And their classes were evaluated from two aspects: lesson plan design and teaching performance.

A total of nine students participated in this year's competition. During the competition, students simulated a real class of their chosen texts and knowledge points by carefully organizing and designing the teaching content with the help of PowerPoints and a variety of realia. Each of them showed their strengths in links as courseware, blackboard notes, interaction with students, and practices. They did give an elaboration of knowledge points by adopting various teaching methods and frequent interactions with imagined students.Judges spoke highly of their performance, and gave them some advice to further improve themselves in the following practices.

Qian Xiaoke and Qin Liumian had shown their great potential to teach Chinese to speakers of other languages, for they tried new teaching methods with rich content. After two and a half hours of fierce competition, these two participants had emerged as the winners and become the candidates for “Wodongbei” Competition.

This competition served as a platform for TCSOL master’s students to show their teaching ability and deepen their understanding of teaching skills and objects, and class language and designs. In addition, this competition provided students with an opportunity to learn and communicate with each other, and to gain more insight and reflection on classroom teaching.
