The Fifth Chinese Skills Competition for International Students


College of International Education (CIE) held the fifth Chinese skills competition for international students in the Conference Hall 203 on the afternoon of December 8, 2021. After a fierce rivalry in the first round, 13 competitors entered the final, including 11 language students and 2 degree students. By dubbing, reciting, singing, or writing, every competitor had showed his or her excellent Chinese skills and upright learning spirit.

Lin Aiju, secretary of CPC CIE, WZU Committee, Kan Wenwen, professor of the Research Office of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, teacher Xu Lili and teacher Li Jing from the same office attended the competition as judges. Meanwhile, numerous international students and teachers were attracted to watch this competition in site.

First came to the stage were international students Catarina Chen, Tran Thi Ngoc Anh, and Wu William. They dubbed clips from classical Chinese movies and TV series, like Decoding(《解密》), a classical war TV series and Security Check(《安检》), a Chinese comedy. They had won waves of applause and laughter by their fluent Chinese and sincere emotions. 

Then there came Peter Ogechi Peace. Reciting an article in the theme of respecting knowledge and talents, he conveyed to us concepts like knowledge is wealth and a banner of science. After that, Abu-Said Anas Ziad Masoud shared his experience of coming to Wenzhou with romantic words. He said that he came to study in Wenzhou University because of love for Chinese culture.

To show love and light up the stage with music. Mudondo Oriah sang a song named Jasmine Flower(《茉莉花》) . With his clean and clear sound, he set the audience in peace. Singh Michaela Tahlia sang a song named Forever Love. The simple lyric with sincere praise for forever love moved the audience.

After the songs, there came a game called “you act and I guess” (你划我猜), warming up the competition atmosphere. In the game, one student should express the phrase assigned by describing it in Chinese or body language without saying it literally, while another student has to guess what the phrase is and say it out literally. As soon as the countdown started, international students were all engaged themselves in the game. They tried their best to convey the meaning of the phrases given out by the organizer, while their teammates spared no effort to guess what the phrases were. Only students, who have a good master of Chinese and enjoy tacit understanding between teammates, could win the game.

What’s worth mentioning is that while the guessing game was going on, international students Dube Kelvin Errol Tinashe and Mirzoev Ziyodullo were writing Chinese characters with traditional Chinese writing brush. Their beautiful handwriting received great compliments from teachers and students.  

The competition was closed with the song Zhongguo Hua(《中国话》) sung by the Undersea Band, which is made up of international students.

At the end of the competition, teacher Xu Lili made a comment on international students’ performances. She said this competition offered international students a platform to show their achievements in learning Chinese, and an opportunity to see other students’ merits. She hoped international students could continue their efforts in Chinese learning and get to know more about Chinese culture so as to know China better.
