Wenzhou University and Tokyo University Jointly Established an International Water Ecological Environment Research Center


Recently, with the help of an online meeting platform—ZOOM, Wenzhou University and Tokyo University jointly announced the establishment of the International Water Ecological Environment Research Center. Pro. Takizawa, Director of the Water Ecological Environment Research Center of Tokyo University, Pro. Pianshan Haozhi of Tokyo University, Pro. Zhao Min of Wenzhou University, Dean Yan Xiufeng of the College of Life and Environment Science of Wenzhou University, as well as many other relevant teachers and postgraduates attended the online meeting.

On behalf of Wenzhou University, Pro. Zhao Min gave a remark to introduce the principle and concept of development, and mention that Wenzhou University boasts three state-level research and development institutes. These include the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Urban Water Pollution Ecological Management, and twenty-nine provincial level key labs of water environment and marine living resources conservation, providing strong support for conducting scientific research, technological innovation and talent training. Pro. Zhao Min said that the establishment of the International Water Ecological Environment Research Center is of great significance and influence to further strengthen and deepen the international exchange between the two universities, broaden the field of cooperation, and carry out in-depth academic research cooperation and talent training.


Afterwards, Pro. Takizawa, expressed his gratitude and respect to the leaders and professors of Wenzhou University for their contributions to the Sino-Japanese cooperation. He said that to solve the problems of water pollution and environmental management are the common challenges faced by China and Japan. It is expected that through the newly established Center, both sides can work together to strengthen the exchange of disciplines and talents in water pollution and environmental management, achieve common development and make positive contributions to the world’s water pollution and environmental management.


 Wenzhou University has always attached great importance to international exchange and cooperation, insisting on the combination of "going out" and "inviting in" international cooperation strategies, and has established exchanges and cooperation relationships with 125 institutions in 27 countries and regions. Ecology is one of the strong and featured disciplines of key universities in Zhejiang Province and the peak discipline of Wenzhou University. The discipline features water environmental management and ecological restoration, with cyanobacterial water bloom treatment and decentralized domestic wastewater ecological treatment technologies leading internationally.


At present, Wenzhou University has set up international joint research centers with the University of Tokyo in Japan and University of Northern British Columbia in Canada, and jointly recruited doctoral students with the University of North Columbia in Canada and Chonnam University in South Korea. The establishment of the International Water Ecological Environment Research Center between Wenzhou University and the University of Tokyo will continue to focus on the field of water ecology and environment management, and carry out in-depth scientific cooperation through regular academic exchange meetings and collaborative researches, and sending young teachers or master’s students to the University of Tokyo for post-doctoral research or doctoral studies. International Water Ecological Environment Research Center will also be taken as a platform to jointly apply for international cooperation projects and promote in-depth scientific cooperation between the two sides.
