June 14, 2025 – On China’s "Cultural and Natural Heritage Day," over 70 Indonesian students from Wenzhou University’s (WZU) Fourth Session of Qsingshan Class visited Jiushan Park for a special exploration of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) under the theme "Integrating Tradition into Modern Life: Youthful Heritage."
At the park, Zhang Tianqing, a representative inheritor of Taishun rice sculpture, led an engaging workshop where students learned to shape the vibrant folk art using techniques like kneading, carving, and painting. "Rice sculpture isn’t just a craft—it reflects the Chinese people’s delicate connection with nature and daily life," shared student Ramli.
Guided by Wenzhou ICH Center staff, the group also explored a bustling heritage market featuring Ou sculpture, Ou embroidery, colored stone inlay, and Wenzhou-style bonsai. "The traditional costumes, food, and festivals were eye-opening. These ICH items reveal the local wisdom of Wenzhou people," remarked participant Jusri. The itinerary further included national case-study sharings on "ICH in Communities," promotional activities for "ICH in Scenic Spots," and an exhibition of Zhejiang’s ICH training program achievements, highlighting innovative ways to preserve heritage in contemporary society.
WZU’s College of International Education is committed to strengthen people-to-people exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative, using hands-on ICH experiences to deepen global students’ understanding of Chinese culture while amplifying Wenzhou’s traditional arts worldwide. Moving forward, the college will expand university-local collaborations, leveraging ICH as a bridge for cross-cultural dialogue—nurturing global talent and infusing heritage with youthful energy to share China’s cultural legacy internationally.
