Sept. 26, 2025 – Wenzhou University welcomed its 2025 freshman with an innovative opening ceremony that combined traditional welcomes with an "arts-infused ideological education" session on Friday evening at the South Campus sports ground.
The event transformed ideological education into an engaging experience through musical performances, dance, poetic recitations, and multicultural choir presentations.
Over 40 international students played prominent roles in the ceremony, adding global flair to the proceedings. Their participation highlighted the university's growing international character.
During the symbolic badge-pinning ceremony, Bayryyev Baky from Turkmenistan represented international students in receiving the university badge, marking their formal entry into the Wenzhou University community.
Professor Philip Connelly, former Executive Vice President of Wenzhou-Kean University and current Adjunct Professor at the College of International Education, praised the new students' energy and potential in his keynote address.
International students delivered memorable performances that resonated with the audience. Chimezie Gift Chidera from Nigeria opened the musical segment with a stirring rendition of "Dream It Possible," receiving enthusiastic applause.
The multilingual recitation "Read China" featured students from Zambia, Bangladesh, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, and Zimbabwe. Their fluent Mandarin and heartfelt delivery demonstrated deep engagement with Chinese culture.
"Reciting 'Read China' helped me appreciate both the depth and warmth of Chinese culture," said Mawarire Merry Shelin from Zimbabwe. "We're not just students here, but cultural ambassadors."
The international cohort, dressed in unified attire and leading the processional, impressed university officials with their coordinated presentation. Remarkably, the students prepared their performances in under a week.
The ceremony successfully fostered community spirit while providing an inclusive platform for cultural exchange. The College of International Education continues to leverage arts education to help international students share China's stories and build global friendships.
