International Friends Embrace Ancient Art at Wenzhou Lacquer Fan Workshop

Oct 28, 2025

Recently, over twenty foreigners from nine countries gathered recently to experience the ancient art of Chinese lacquer fan making in a cultural workshop organized by Wenzhou University's College of International Education(CIE).

The event, part of the city's "Understanding China" cultural series, brought together participants from the United States, Russia, Australia, Italy, South Africa and other countries for a hands-on introduction to this intangible cultural heritage.

Under the guidance of instructors Huang Yalin and Chen Jiajing, attendees learned about the centuries-old craft before creating their own unique fans. The workshop saw participants carefully dripping lacquer, adjusting patterns, and transferring designs onto fan surfaces.

"The step-by-step guidance made this complex art accessible to everyone," said one participant, admiring her finished fan. "Seeing the vibrant colors flow and create unique patterns was mesmerizing."

The session concluded with participants learning to write Chinese phrases expressing their appreciation for Wenzhou and the traditional craft. Many left not just with handmade souvenirs, but with deeper connections to Chinese culture.

As part of Wenzhou's ongoing cultural exchange initiatives, CIE plans to host more workshops that bridge cultures through traditional arts, introducing the city's international community to China's rich cultural heritage.
