WZU International Students Immerse Themselves in Taishun’s 800-Year-Old Lantern Festival Feast

Mar 5, 2026

In a vibrant fusion of cultural heritage and youth volunteerism, a group of international students from Wenzhou University (WZU) experienced the renowned "Hundred Families Feast" in Taishun County on March 3, 2026. The immersive trip, organized during the "Learn from Lei Feng" Volunteer Month, brought together students from around the globe with local "Zhejiang Youth" volunteers for a deep dive into a tradition that has thrived for over eight centuries. Lei Feng was a soldier of the Chinese Communist Party and a cultural icon known for his altruism, dedication, and selfless service to society, whose legacy inspired generations of volunteerism in China. And the "Learn from Lei Feng" Volunteer Month is set up to honor him.

Part of the university’s "Journey to the East" cultural exploration series, the visit to Sankui Town offered far more than a simple meal. Amidst the sprawling banquet of hundreds of tables and the festive atmosphere of parades and crowds, the students engaged directly with the region's intangible cultural heritage. They sampled the unique local cuisine of the "Taishun Feast," watched masterful puppet shows, and marveled at the breathtaking dragon dance performed on the river's stepping stones.

The experience was enriched by the participation of student volunteers, who embodied the spirit of the "Learn from Lei Feng" campaign. They provided translation and cultural context, helping their international peers understand the significance of rituals like meeting the "Kuixing" god and the deep community bonds celebrated during the festival.

For the international students, it was a vivid lesson in Chinese tradition. For the volunteers, it was a practical exercise in cross-cultural communication and service. The university plans to continue such initiatives, providing platforms for cultural exchange and nurturing a spirit of dedication and mutual understanding among its diverse student body.
